reading is fundamental...

so i read...bunches of stuff...cookbooks, novels, travel, photo, music and literature mags by the metric ton...i read about our world...all of it not just the city...the state...the region ...the nation i live in...i read stuff i don't agree with...i read stuff that's flat out untrue...but i read...i force myself through stuff that's absolute crap so i understand what is motivating people to think the way they do...i am not the sharpest pencil in the pack...more likely a very sharp spoon ...but...i wonder daily why so many of us are so willing to form an opinion from someone Else's mouth...or television appearance...if you read you can also read between the lines...you understand that when G.W. said that he knew there were no weapons of mass destruction...he meant but there were more important reasons to destabilize and control another country...oil...i also know that this group that is blindly slashing the size of government and programs that effect the least of us... they really never read how those self same cuts would effect all of us...they are finding out that...striking blows against teachers and their unions means less teachers... larger class sizes...dumber kids...they are soon to find out that the massive increases in their health insurance will continue unabated if they manage to dismantle the Obama health care plan...because every day more of us are poor...less of us can afford to go to the doctor...or buy the drugs...insurance companies will have to pay more to the hospitals so those bills get paid...and those of you with healthcare will pay for all of us...if you read you find out that most of the conservatives yelling the loudest for your attention have the least to say...read about how re-investing in American wind power could provide the U.S. with a cutting edge advantage as we enter the new world of lesser and lesser petroleum products...and that people have been forecasting the nuclear disaster in japan as long as there have been nuclear reactors....but if you don't read than you can't help...you can't offer a voice...you can't form an intelligent opinion...and then rick Scott is your governor...john boenher is the most powerful republican in this country...and Barack Obama wasn't born an american citizen...

As I age, i find that I am far less accepting of life's little faux pas.  I am surly.  I growl. I snap at unsuspecting irritants.  I look in the mirror and see  what my life has pulled down on me.  Wrinkles, saddle bags, hair in very strange palaces.  I expect things...simple things to proceed as planned.  If my cellular bill, for example, is due on the 24th, I expect it to be taken out on that date. Today is your memorial service.  Today your friends gather at historic Gracie's to tell tales, laugh and drink to your memory.  I worked for Gracie, thanks to you, sneaky Pete and Steve.  Its fitting, a legendary spot, to pay tribute to the man that inspired me and unknown others to go chase our dreams.  I loved when we cooked together and I found my passion, standing next to you.  You shared your love and unfathomably incredible knowledge of music with me.  I found Jason Ricci, Eric Lindell, Los Lobos and David Migden in our "MO, wait till you hear this moments".  I endured your love of all things Zappa and I survived Zappa torture.  To those unfamiliar with this, it involved the can, copious amounts of inhaleables and song after song of your archives.
